30 Years of SciFiChick

That smile was when I was still 29. ->

Yes, today I turn the “Big Three Oh.”

I can’t believe I’m actually coming to terms with it. I thought I’d spend the day crying.

It does help that I’m taking off to California on vacation in a couple weeks… Planning it around Creation’s Grand Slam SciFi Convention, where Adrian Paul (Highlander), Justin Hartley (Smallville’s Green Arrow), George Takei (Star Trek’s Sulu), and Colin Ferguson (Eureka) are just some of the guests that weekend. And the rest of the days will be filled with reading, lounging in the sun, and family.

I have found myself reevaluating where I am in life, what I’ve accomplished, and where I want to go from here. These eight years since college have just flown by.

To celebrate the day, friends from work are taking me out to lunch, then I plan on leaving work at noon and going to see TMNT. Recapture my youth and all that. And for dinner, the family will be coming down to take me to my place of choice, Macaroni Grill. Topped off with Tiramisu for dessert.

And, of course, there’s the trip to Los Angeles I have planned in a couple weeks. That’s a birthday gift to myself.

Other events that happened on March 30th:

1842 – Anesthesia is used for the first time in an operation by Dr. Crawford Long. (And thank goodness for that!)

1858 – Hymen Lipman patents a pencil with an attached eraser.

1867 – Alaska is purchased for $7.2 million, about 2 cent/acre ($4.19/km²), by United States Secretary of State William H. Seward. The news media call this Seward’s Folly.

1981 – President Ronald Reagan is shot in the chest outside a Washington, D.C., hotel by John Hinckley, Jr.

Births:
1853 – Vincent van Gogh, Dutch painter.
1937 – Warren Beatty, American actor and director
1945 – Eric Clapton, British guitarist/singer
1962 – MC Hammer, American rapper (heheh)
1964 – Ian Ziering, American actor (I’ll admit I had a small crush on this 90210 actor.)
1968 – Celine Dion, Canadian singer
1979 – Norah Jones, American singer and pianist (I almost didn’t put her down, since she’s 2 years younger than me. :P)

  1. Happy Birthday! I loved turning 30. I feel like I finally caught up with my age when I got into my thirties. Admittingly, I am not looking forward so much to being older than I am now. Maybe I’ll stay 33 for the next few years . . .

  2. Happy Birthday! You’re so pretty!

I didn’t cry at thirty. I cried at 36. I turned 37 last Saturday and was just kind of quiet.

I should have realized you’re an Aries, too.

  3. You look so cute in your pic’s! 🙂 And by the way I’m very much looking forward to your trip pictures.

‘We know we’re getting old when the only thing we want for our birthday is not to be reminded of it.’

    Happy Birthday Angela!!! 🙂

  4. That’s right, today is both you and my dad’s birthday!!! Congrats on entering the cool decade (he says as he rapidly approaches 39!).

I hope you have a wonderful birthday weekend…Friday is such a perfect day to have a birthday!!!

  5. That’s right, Mary.. I’ve aged so much in these past few months. LOL
Actually, I’m not as pale as I was in that photo above.. Man, compare it to that photo on the left, and you can tell it was winter!
Today, I have a nice base tan for my trip to Cali. 🙂

  6. Happy B-Day.

30 didn’t faze me, 36 bothered me a bit because then I was closer to 40 than 30. Now I’m just kind of resigned to the fact that I can’t stop this ageing thing.

  7. Happy birthday. Oh how I remember thirty fondly. That was almost six years ago for me. Since then, I got married had a kid and went back to school to be a writer ( one of these days I will be a published writer). Go to Cali and have fun.

btw tiramisu is my favorite too!

  8. Happy Birthday!! Turning 30 wasn’t too bad for me. I thought it would be worse than it was. You’re right, it helps to take a look back at what you’ve accomplished in what really is a short piece of your life.

  9. “You’re thirty, flirty and thriving” as Jenna in 13 Going 30 would say. You may be thirty but you don’t look it…you could pass for being 25. I bet when you tell people how old you really are they’re like, “Whoa, no way!”

Enjoy the day and your California vacation with the Green Arrow. Get his picture if you can!!!

    Happy B-day!!!! God bless!!

  10. Happy Birthday Angela. That is a very striking picture of you! Enjoy your day, and don’t forget to give your mom a hug too (30 years ago today, she wasn’t feeling to good lol! Enjoy your vacation, hope to see you in Novi in a few weeks!

  11. Happy birthday, Angela, I hope you have a good ‘un.

    of lovely OLD you

    Hehehe.

  12. Happy Birthday Angela.

Have a wonderful day and a great vacation.

30 is just a number. As long as you are still young at heart that’s all that matters!

    Best Wishes
    Stuart

  13. I missed your birthday. ACK!

Happy Belated birthday, yesterday i was drowning in a sea of reactine.

I have one more year of the twenties (I’m 29 in 3 wks).

I feel terrible for missing it, so again Happy Birthday!!!

  14. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCI-FI CHICK,
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

(My pet will go through that next year. I’m sure it’ll be a meltdown for her.)

  15. Oh no! I missed your birthday! Happy Belated Birthday!

My most traumatic birthday to date was my 26th. For some reason I was convinced I would be dead at the end of if. None of them has been traumatic since, but I’m thinking the next one might be a bit.

    Yum, tiramisu.
