Renewals and Cancellations

Well, ABC renewed my beloved Eli Stone for another season… But it looks like CBS cancelled Moonlight. And I’m even more upset than when NBC cancelled Journeyman. Both Blood Ties and Moonlight have bit the dust. I guess vampire shows just can’t catch a break since Buffy and Angel left.

Catch the season (and series) finale of Moonlight tonight on CBS.

  1. I really enjoyed both shows. I can sort of see why they canceled Moonlight, but Blood Ties was a great show. There was a big fan effort to try to get SciFi to pick it up, but it wasn’t successful.

  2. I don’t really think you can compare Buffy (I never liked Angel personally) and Blood Ties and Moonlight. Buffy was a campy, tongue-in-cheek show that appealed to a broader audience. While Blood Ties and Moonlight were basically chick-lit vampire romance novels made into Tv shows that appealed mostly to women. I don’t know many scifi dudes who watched either show.

  3. I’ve decided that whoever is in charge of these decisions wouldn’t know a decent show if it bit them.

Dresden Files. Moonlight. The list goes on. And On. And On.

  4. What bothers me is that it seems to be like the bestseller syndrome. It can be a midlist show–liked but not with the numbers of say American Idol or Grey’s Anatomy–and so they’ll dump it fast or move it around so that no one can find it, or put it in a slot when no one watches. I think Moonlight was beginning to find its feet, and I thought Blood Ties was amazing. Dresden Files was beginning to find its feet too. It’s to the point where it’s becoming a vicious circle–why bother taking a chance on a show and getting involved with it and then have it get canceled out from under you? So they lose viewers because they cancel shows and they cancel shows because they lose viewers. A chicken and the egg situation.

I’m just tired of it. It’s an argument to cling to books, I suppose.

  5. It was unfortunate that Journeyman was canceled. We really looked forward to that every Monday evening. It didn’t surprise me, more often than not the shows I like get canceled, but it is still disappointing.

  6. Yeah, I can’t really compare Moonlight to Buffy or Angel but it had it’s place. I do think Blood Ties was a better show than Moonlight. Better acting and better characterizations. I was really miffed when they cancelled Dresden Files and I agree with earlier posts. Why invest the time into a show when it’s likely not going to be around. It does bode well for books. I just hope networks realize it takes awhile to build an audience and it’s not going to happen overnight like American Idol. When you create something so genre specific it takes time.

  8. Yeah, like I said, I was no big fan of Moonlight, etc, but the thing of it is this–Scifi/fantasy shows ALWAYS get the short end of the stick! Remember it took shows like Seinfeld, Cheers, Friends, Mad about You, etc, several seasons to find their audience. But again, that was comedy. With scifi/fantasy you don’t get seasons to find your audience, sometimes you get episodes.

  9. My dad loved Moonlight, and he’s a scifi guy. I think they did a wonderful job of infusing crime thriller, mystery, and just enough romance to appeal to a wide audience.
But like I’ve said, the networks wouldn’t know a decent show if it slapped them in the face.
I’m trying not to get too attached to shows in their first season now.
