City of Ember

When the underground city of Ember was founded, it was to last 200 years. And a box with instructions for returning to the surface was left with the mayor, to be passed to each following mayor, which would open at the end of the 200 years. But over time, the box was misplaced. Now the city is dying. And it’s up to two children to discover the way out of Ember.

I haven’t read the book that the movie is based upon. So I had no expectations going in. I’ve discovered that this is sometimes best. And I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

The characters were vibrant and eccentric, especially that of the villainous mayor played by Bill Murray. The acting is wonderful, and the intensity of the characters of Lina and Doon quickly pulled me into the story.

The city of Ember itself, was fascinating. And the mystery behind it was enthralling. Though not every question is answered, such as why the city was built. We just have to assume that all, or most, of humanity was wiped out on the surface for some reason. With non-stop adventure and suspense, City of Ember is a treat for viewers of all ages.

I’m not sure why I haven’t heard more about this film. But I’ll certainly be reading the book now. Has anyone else read this or other books in the series?
