iPhone App Review: Scarlett and the Spark of Life

Scarlett and the Spark of Life is a point and tap adventure game available exclusively in the iTunes App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch for $2.99. The adventure follows Scarlett who has recently been kidnapped. The player must help Scarlett outsmart her kidnappers, flee to a nearby town, help several of the townspeople, and make a clean getaway. The gameplay is very easy as it is simply tapping the screen for Scarlett to walk and interact with people or objects. Talking with people are multiple choice responses, where it is impossible to lose. Most are simply quirky, humorous responses to make the game more fun and light-hearted. Though, at times I found the dialog cumbersome and overdone. I found myself just clicking randomly to just get through it and on to the actual actions. Again, with the action and movement, the game won’t let you do anything to get you stuck (or die). It’s always possible to win the game, so you can try interacting with anything, again sometimes with humorous results, and eventually, even the more difficult of answers will be clear. Some just have to be solved later, after other events have happened.

This is supposedly just the introductory episode in Scarlett’s adventures. As this is a fairly short game, the $2.99 price tag is a bit steep. But for those who love the point and click adventures, like I do, the game is certainly enjoyable and a great start to a promising series.
