The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson
After a heart-breaking tragedy, Waxillium Ladrian has retired from being a lawman in the Roughs to the city of Elendel where he becomes head of his family’s noble house. But as Wax discovers, the big city can be just as dangerous as the Roughs. When he is confronted with a gang of thieves and kidnappers, Wax decides to take matters into his own hands. He and his old friend Wayne must use their inherent gifts of Allomancy and Feruchemy to battle a mysterious new foe with a hidden agenda.
Waxillium is Twinborn who can Push metals through the air with his Allomancy and use Feruchemy to make his body weight lighter or heavier at will. He is a brilliant and brooding detective with a penchant for finding trouble. Sanderson has created a new series, centuries following his original Mistborn trilogy. This era is fantasy meets the Old West – a Steampunk Western of sorts.
Thankfully, though the timing follows the previous Mistborn era, this new story is standalone. I have not read the previous novels, and did not feel lost at all. The magical elements were explained very well, with only brief mentions of the Mistborn history. With plenty of drama, action, suspense, and intrigue – The Alloy of Law was completely riveting and a fun mystery.
The audio version is narrated by Michael Kramer. He has a fantastic bass, with clever accents to distinguish between characters. Though, with his deep voice, the female characters were a bit humorous to hear.
