Syfy BTS Press Tour – Helix Set Tour Part 1

I was able to attend this year’s Syfy Digital Press Tour (or Behind-the-Scenes Tour) in Montreal where most of our day was on the set of Helix, Syfy’s newest series coming in January 2014!

Some of the areas are still under embargo, so I’m not allowed to post those photos yet. But here’s what I can show…

We started our tour through the corridors of the Helix station. I was able to catch it on video, so that it feels like you’re actually there:

And here’s a live action scene in a lab that we got to see up close:

Here are some various shots of the labs:

Fantasy Book Review: The Hallowed Ones

The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle

Synopsis:
Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the real world. But the real world comes to her in this dystopian tale with a philosophical bent. Rumors of massive unrest on the “Outside” abound. Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she can’t leave him to die. She smuggles him into her family’s barn—at what cost to her community?

Review:
This unique YA horror took me by surprise. The romantic setting of a small Amish community is offset by an apocalyptic horror from the Outside world. Katie is a relatable teenage girl, despite her Amish heritage. She wants to experience everything the Outside world has to offer during her Rumspringa, with a special love for Coca-Cola and Wonder Woman comics. Her community sees her behavior as a somewhat rebellious nature, but she’s simply a strong and independent young woman who doesn’t want to settle down right away. If you can’t tell by now, I loved this character. Though this Amish community, or at least Katie’s morals, are definitely not as conservative as most of the Amish that I’ve learned about.

Told from Katie’s point of view, the mystery and suspense were heart-pounding and chilling. Many reviews on Amazon are laden with spoilers about the dark events going on Outside of the community. I hate reading spoilers about plots, so I won’t delve into the details here. But Bickle handled the scary fantasy elements extremely well, with plenty of surprises along the way. The Hallowed Ones is an unpredictable story that is both romantic and thrilling.

The Hallowed Ones releases from Graphia on September 25, 2012.

Fantasy Book Review: Vampire Empire: The Kingmakers

Vampire Empire: The Kingmakers by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith

Synopsis:
Empress Adele has launched a grand crusade against the vampire clans of the north. Prince Gareth, the vampire lord of Scotland, serves the Equatorian cause, fighting in the bloody trenches of France in his guise as the dashing Greyfriar. But the human armies are pinned down, battered by harsh weather and merciless attacks from vampire packs.
To even the odds, Adele unleashes the power of her geomancy, a fear- some weapon capable of slaughtering vampires in vast numbers. However, the power she expends threatens her own life even as she questions the morality of such a weapon.
As the war turns ever bloodier and Adele is threatened by betrayal, Gareth faces a terrible choice. Their only hope is a desperate strike against the lord of the vampire clans—Gareth’s brother, Cesare. It is a gamble that could win the war or signal the final days of the Greyfriar.

Review:
This is the third and final installment in the Vampire Empire trilogy. Adele is now the Empress, and humanity has declared all-out war against the vampires. Empress Adele can now use her geomancy against every vampire on earth, but that would mean the death of her beloved Gareth as well as genocide. Meanwhile, Gareth has decided he needs to assassinate his brother and claim the throne in order to save humanity and vampires from more destruction. But the deadly Flay still stands in their way. And traitors in Adele’s midst may mean the death of both Gareth and Adele.

Treason, betrayal, romance, revenge, war, and military strategy – this is a fantastic conclusion to an epic fantasy trilogy. Cleverly combining vampire horror with steampunk, alternative history Vampire Empire is a trilogy fans of fantasy or vampire fiction should not miss. With strong characters, forbidden romance, action, suspense, and intrigue – I can’t recommend this one enough. The Kingmakers is a solid, riveting and extremely satisfying finale that had me on the edge of my seat till the very end.
