Box Review: DC’s Legion of Collectors – May 2016

FullSizeRender

This is the 2nd box from DC’s Legion of Collectors and the theme was DC TV. The Legion of Collectors offers these boxes starting at $25 plus s/h.

IMG_1613

Like the other mystery boxes from Funko, each box comes with an exclusive badge and pin.

FullSizeRender (1)

The Flash #123 Legion of Collectors Variant (Retail $4+?) – Not sure what the retail price is, as it’s not on the comic itself. But I was happy to get a Flash comic

Legion of Collectors

Arrow Tshirt (Retail $10?) – Yet another black shirt. But I do like this design! I’ll be keeping this one.

FullSizeRender (2)

EXCLUSIVE Jay Garrick Funko POP! (Retail $15+) – I LOVE this Jay Garrick exclusive! It’s unique looking and one I don’t have… a nice surprise.

FullSizeRender (3)

EXCLUSIVE Rock Candy Supergirl (Retail $15+) – While I was a bit bummed this wasn’t a POP, I really like the look of these Rock Candy figures. And they aren’t ones that I’d buy for myself. Here’s a comparison of the exclusive versus the regular version available in stores below.

Summary: I enjoyed this 2nd box even more than the first! The value is great. And I loved the choices this month. I only wish they could have incorporated Legends of Tomorrow with more than just a pin, since I’m a big fan of the show. Hopefully, down the road, we’ll see some Funko POPs from the show.

The next theme is Suicide Squad, which is appropriate with the new film coming.

This month’s theme was Elementals. Each box comes with a nice card describing each of the month’s picks.

Comic Bento

Fantastic Four Season One (Retail $24.99) – I enjoy this Season One series, and this is one I don’t have yet! I’m a big Fantastic Four fan. And I always appreciate hardbacks and the added value.
Publisher: Marvel (February 22, 2012)

Comic Bento

Book of Death (Retail $14.99) – I enjoy these characters from what I’ve read of Valiant titles so far. So I’m looking forward to this one too.
Publisher: Valiant (February 2, 2016)

Comic Bento

Surface Tension (Retail $19.99) – This looks like an interesting premise. I look forward to reading this one as well.
Publisher: Titan Comics (March 8, 2016)

Comic Bento

Four Points: Horsemen EXCLUSIVE Cover (Retail $12.99) – Not only did we receive this before it hit stores, but it’s an exclusive cover.
Publisher: Aspen (May 4, 2016)

Summary: The value (as always) is great this month. And I’m interested in reading all of the titles! I appreciate the variety in the publishers as well. I usually only read Marvel and a few DC titles. So, this gives me some exposure to the smaller pubs.

Box Review: Marvel Collector Corps – April 2016 – Civil War

Marvel Collector Corps

This is the 7th box from Collector Corps and the theme was Captain America: Civil War! The Marvel Collector Corps offers these boxes starting at $25 plus s/h.

Marvel Collector Corps

Each box comes with an exclusive badge and pin.

Marvel Collector Corps

This month is the first that a nice card has been included detailing the contents of the box!

Civil War Lanyard (Retail $2-3?) – As stated on the card, this is a great way to showcase all the pins we’ve been collecting!

Marvel Collector Corps

Civil War Tshirt (Retail $10?) – I’m not a big fan of the Pop tshirt designs, but I do think I’ll be wearing this one.

Marvel Collector Corps

EXCLUSIVE Unmasked Iron Man Dorbz (Retail $10+) – I don’t buy Dorbz, but have collected several so far just from Funko boxes. And this is one of my favorites so far.

Marvel Collector Corps

Black Panther #1 Variant (Retail $4.99) – I’m excited to read this one!

Marvel Collector Corps
Marvel Collector Corps

EXCLUSIVE Captain America / Iron Man 2 Pack (Retail $35+) – An exclusive 2-pack! My day was made! I love the unique design of Iron Man, even though he has to use a stand. Captain America has his head at a 90 degree turn from his body.

For a comparison, I put Cap beside my new GameStop exclusive Captain America. He’s drastically turned to the side, so it’s awkward positioning for display on my shelf. I think I prefer the kneeling GameStop exclusive. But I’m still happy to have another Cap exclusive and a unique mold!

Marvel Collector Corps

Summary: This month was one of my favorites. 2 exclusive (new mold) POP!s AND a Dorbz AND a fun shirt design. The box itself was extra large, so I doubt they’ll do this very often. But it was a fantastic box for their 1 year anniversary!

Box Review: BAM! Box – April 2016

Bam Box - April 2016

The Bam Box was founded in 2015 by Bloof, the same team of geeks, comic book lovers and pop culture collectors that started ComiconAuction.com. We love collecting. We love the thrill of it, the mystery of it and especially that feeling you get when you have a collectible in your hands that you are really excited about. So we set out to bring something different to everyone.

There are some great subscription boxes on the market, but we felt there was still something missing. We went to the drawing board with the goal of creating the box we would want to show up on our doorstep. After a lot of ideas and prototypes we arrived at the Bam Box. From the design of the box to the items inside to the instant winners we send out, we accomplished what we wanted to do: give you the subscription box we would be jealous of.

Cost: 1 month plan starts at $24.99 plus $7.99 s/h

SciFiChick.com received a box for review purposes.

IMG_1523

The box comes with a half sheet, full-color information on what’s in the box.
This month’s theme was RIP!

IMG_1519

Gwen Stacy Prop Replica ID Card (Retail $2-3?) – For the few people who actually liked the Amazing Spider-Man 2? Still, it’s a nice replica of the deceased character’s ID.

IMG_1521

Aril Lehman Signed Jason Mask (Retail $30-40?) – I’m not a horror fan at all, but this is a great item for the many who are! I was certainly impressed! And 150 subscribers received a gold variant and 150 received a silver variant.

IMG_1522

EXCLUSIVE “Live Long and Prosper” Leonard Nimoy Tribute Sign (Retail ?) – I was one of the lucky 200 who scored a gold sign variant! Everyone else received a silver sign. This was my favorite item in the box, so how perfect I got the 1-up version?!

IMG_1520

Biohazard Zombie Brass Knuckles (Retail $13.95) – These are solid, heavy knuckles. And the 1-up version for this was Zombucks mint coins.

IMG_1525

EXCLUSIVE Print of Heath Ledger’s Nurse Joker (Retail N/A) – Each of these are hand-signed and numbered by the artist, Chris Uminga! And I appreciate the Certificate of Authenticity that comes with the unique items.

Summary:
This box is an impressive new geek box with several exclusives. The hand-signed items alone are worth the cost of the box and are things you could only otherwise get at a comic book convention. The curation is unique and the items all fit in well with the theme. The value is great! And I love the idea of the 1-up items and how many there are!

I look forward May’s theme: “Abilities”

Boom Box - April

SciFiChick.com received a box for review purposes.

Boom Box - April

The shipment came with a handy card that detailed all of the contents with make-up application tips.

Boom Box - April

Valknjoggr Nail Wraps (Retail $10)- These dragon scale nail wraps are incredible. Fantasy fans will love these.

Mysctical Mane Nail Wraps (Retail $10) – Unicorns! These are fun and sparkly. My young nieces will get a kick out them, as they’re a bit too young for me. See close up pics of both of these wrap sets below.

Boom Box - April
Boom Box - April

Boom Box - April

Espionage Cosmetics Crest Sticker (Retail $3) – This is cute filler.

Banshee Lip Serum (Retail $9) – While the color looks really purple in the tube, this is actually a pretty mauve color. You can see in the little container above. Instructions said to mix it with Rumpelstiltskin to change the color a bit, but I didn’t add much.

Rumpelstiltskin Everything Shadow (Retail $7.50)- This is a shimmery gold color that will look good layered with some darker shadows.

Boom Box - April

Mermaiden Stationery 3-Pack (Retail $10)- These are pretty but won’t get used, as I never use stationery or mail notes. Sending a birthday card is as much as I use hard copy greetings. And I don’t know many who do. Do teenagers still write hand-written notes?

Boom Box - April

EXCLUSIVE Neverland Gilded Temporary Tattoos (Retail N/A, $5 each?) – My niece loves temporary tattoos and Tinkerbell, so she’ll LOVE these whimsical designs.

Unicorn Soap (Retail around $3) – I love this soap design. I doubt I’ll want to ruin it by using it! Plus the scent is Green Apple Explosion.

Nail File (Retail $.50)- A basic nail file, but I’m always needing these.

Boom Box - April

EXCLUSIVE Rosina Leckermaul’s “Candy Cleanse” Sugar Scrub (Retail N/A, $10?) – Wow! This looks and smells edible! This delicious-looking scrub smells amazing and is a great exfoliator.

Summary: Last year a friend got me a fun Espionage Cosmetics box with comic book nail wraps that I absolutely love. Ever since, I’ve been looking forward to this new monthly mystery box. And I was not disappointed. This make-up box is a must for geeky gals of all ages. It’s fun and whimsical and completely unlike any other make-up/beauty box out there. And the value is great.

Graphic Novel Review: Lantern City

Lantern City Vol. 1
Publisher: Archaia (April 5, 2016)

Synopsis:
How far would you go to be with the person you love?

Sander Jorve just wants to keep his wife and son safe. Living in the brutalized lower class of Lantern City means living in near constant darkness, the enormous walls of the city always looming overhead, while the upper class enjoys the elevated, interconnected towers and airships above. When Sander’s brother-in-law, the persuasive activist Kendal, convinces him to infiltrate the brutal ranks of the Guard, he’s set on a dangerous path that will test his abilities and beliefs, all in the name of making a difference for his family and his caste.

Review:
This steampunk graphic novel drew me in right away. The artwork is stunning and makes the story work. It’s a dark and militaristic world. And the story grabs hold with plenty of suspense and intrigue. My only complaint is that it was over too soon. It leaves off in a bit of a cliffhanger, that will leave readers eager for the next volume.

Comic Bento

This month’s theme was POWERLESS. Each box comes with a nice card describing each of the month’s picks.

Comic Bento

Ordinary (Retail $19.99) – Everyone in the world has superpowers – except Michael. This looks like a fun, unique take on superhero comics. I’m looking forward to this one.
Publisher: Titan (October 22, 2014)

Comic Bento

Stumptown Volume 2 (Retail $29.99) – This is a mystery that has good reviews. And despite being the 2nd volume, I read that it’s still a good standalone story.
Publisher: Oni Press (October 1, 2013)

Comic Bento

Ninjak: Weaponeer (Retail $9.99 on Amazon) – This looks like an action-packed book I’ll enjoy.
Publisher: Valiant Entertainment, LLC (October 13, 2015)

Comic Bento

Blackcross (Retail $19.99) – This is a newer selection. It doesn’t have great reviews, but it’s written by Warren Ellis, so I’ll give it a try.
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment (March 29, 2016)

Summary: All of the picks this month are new to me. And no DC or Marvel titles this time. But all of these picks look interesting to me, so I’m still content with this curation.

Box Review: Loot Pets – March 2016

Loot Pets - March 2016

Loot Pets is a monthly mystery crate for pets and the people that love them, delivering apparel, accessories, toys, treats and more. You get a $50+ value in every crate! For every crate purchased, Loot Pets will donate $1 to a local, national, or international animal welfare charity.

Use this link to get $5 off your first month!

Loot Pets - March 2016

This was our first Loot Pets box… and Lois Lane somehow knew this box was for her. She made sure to try to get in every picture after the box was open.

Loot Pets - March 2016

Each box comes with a cute mini mag, as the regular box does.

Loot Pets - March 2016

Loot Crate Pin – This box comes with the same monthly pin as the standard box.

Loot Pets - March 2016

Ruff ‘Em Ups! Fruity Protein Puffs for Pups (Retail $6.49) – She smelled these, but turned away in disinterest right away. So, I’m not sure if she’ll try these. Lois Lane is very picky when it comes to dog food and treats.

Loot Pets - March 2016

Turduck’NStein Menacing Meat Treats for Dogs (Retail $7.29) – Both of these treats are labeled as Made in the USA. The ingredients on the back are simple and not bad!

Loot Pets - March 2016

These were a hit!

Loot Pets - March 2016

EXCLUSIVE Captain America: Civil War Collapsible Dog Bowl Set (Retail $5?) – These are stylish and large, and each comes a carabiner to latch on to a bag or clothing for travel and treks.

Loot Pets - March 2016 Loot Pets - March 2016

Phunny Batman v Superman Plush (Retail $16.94) – While this is a cute plush to promote the new movie, Lois Lane is team Superman. So she wanted nothing to do with it. Just kidding. It’s not actually dog toy, so there’s no squeaker in it. And that’s why she really didn’t care for it. She did bite on it later, but she usually shows little interest in any toy that doesn’t squeak.

Loot Pets - March 2016

Spock Mirror Universe Tshirt (Retail $10?) – These dog shirts match the ones in the standard Loot Crates, so I now have a matching shirt with my dog! And it’s Star Trek! Love it!

Loot Pets - March 2016

For sizing purposes, go larger. This is a Large, and Lois Lane is just a bit larger than a standard Beagle. At first, I thought it’d be too small for her, but it’s a nice stretchy, soft material that fit her well.

Loot Pets - March 2016

Lois Lane loves trying on clothes and bandannas, so this round of pictures was too fun to narrow down…

Loot Pets - March 2016

Summary:
I absolutely love this Loot Pets box. I will definitely be ordering more in the future. Not next month, as the items listed below don’t interest me. But the value and curation of this box was a lot of fun for both my dog and me – much more fun than regular dog subscription boxes. If it included a Funko POP for me, it just may be the perfect box. But then, I am all about my dog.

April’s theme is: QUEST (with items from Adventure Time, Battlepug and more)
