The 13th Reality: The Journal of Curious Letters

The 13th Reality: The Journal of Curious Letters, by James Dashner, is the beginning of an all new scifi/fantasy series for young adults.

Atticus (Tick) Higginbottom is an extremely smart boy. He has to deal with bullies at school, but has a great home life. Right before the holiday season, Tick receives a mysterious letter in the mail from Macadamia, Alaska. With no return address and only signed “M.G.” Tick decides to follow the series of clues to see where they lead and to supposedly save lives in the process.

Tick is a great kid – kind and brave. And unlike most young quest fantasies, Tick actually confides in his father. This allows him to not only feel safer; but his father is able to help him along his journey. This was an extremely fun story with several great characters. Though, my one complaint is Tick’s friend Sophia from Italy. Her derogatory humor annoyed me to no end, especially spewing the same comments over and over. And she just came across as a spoiled brat. I’m not sure why Tick would want to befriend her or think her funny. But they are able to collaborate and solve clues together.

Involving quantum physics and alternate realities, the plot is a unique one for youth. And my favorite part was trying to solve the clues in the letters along with Tick. This is a great read for young, scifi/fantasy lovers who enjoy puzzles. James Dashner has created a fun and exciting new series that I’m looking forward to following in the future.

The Journal of Curious Letters releases March 3rd.

  1. Hey, thanks for the nice review! Wow, that means a lot, and I’m glad you liked it.

Yeah, I meant Sofia to be annoying and crabby, but maybe I went too far. 🙂 Her character develops a lot in the second book.

Thanks again, I appreciate the nice words.

  2. Her character did get noticably more mature at the showdown at the end of the book. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how all the kids develop in the next book!
    Thanks, James!
