Celebrating her latest release, Touching Darkness, Jaime Rush was kind enough to answer questions about her current Offspring series in an exclusive interview for SciFiChick.com.

Can you give us a brief synopsis of Touching Darkness?

Nicholas Braden, a psychic spy in a covert government program, suspects he’s a pawn in a mad man’s quest for justice. His boss’s stunning assistant is too loyal to give him answers, but Olivia’s secret, wild side bends his mind and fires his body. As they edge closer to the darkest truth, good and evil blur, threatening their very survival.

How many books do you have planned for your Offspring series?

I’m contracted for six right now. Book 4, Burning Darkness (Jan 2011) concludes the government arc, and from there the books will be more stand-alone. In theory, they could go on for a while, which would be great!

Urban fantasy and paranormal is incredibly popular right now. What is different about the Offspring series that sets it apart from the others?

Very few books out there focus on psychic abilities like telekinesis and pyrokinesis. My series plays with concepts that are or could be real, depending on your beliefs. It’s also inspired by two real secret government programs.

How did you set about creating this unique paranormal world?

My world is pretty much our world, though a lot of the “world” my characters inhabit is a bomb shelter that they call the Tomb. That’s the one place where they’re safe. The series is primarily set in Annapolis, Maryland and D.C.

What’s next for you, besides your Offspring novels? Any other stories on the horizon?

I’m playing around with other ideas. I love writing the Offspring, but my muse wants to explore other stories as well.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your experience in writing.

I’ve always been a writer, from way back when I was a kid. My first two books came out in 1995 (St. Martin’s Press). I published 18 books under my real name, Tina Wainscott. They ranged from romance to paranormal romantic suspense to psychological suspense. When I went to my new publisher with a series that went back to my paranormal roots, we decided it was best to come out under a fresh new name.

What inspires you?

Nature, the dynamics of the different kinds of people on the planet, and my interest in things paranormal.

Who are some of your favorite authors? What books do you love?

I don’t get to read as much as I’d like to, but I love Heather Graham, Linnea Sinclair, Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, and Janet Evanovich. I love Ilona Andrews’ two series.

What do you do when you’re not writing? In your spare time?

I spend time with my family and friends. We live in a coastal town, so spending time on the boat or Sea Doos is a lot of fun.

Thanks for your time! Is there anything else you’d like to add?

For every book release, I host my Kick Butt First Line contest with cash prizes. Shocking, suspenseful…make us want more! For aspiring authors, it’s a chance to get your name out there and add a “win” to your bio. For readers, it’s a chance to play at being a writer, and everyone has at least one good line in them, right? The entries are a lot of fun to read! For details, go to www.JaimeRush.com and click on the Contest link. This contest runs from through June 1, 2009.
