Book Review: Hard Spell

Hard Spell, by Justin Gustainis

Detective Stan Markowski works for the Scranton PD’s Supernatural Crimes Investigation Unit. When a wizard is found dead and an ancient book stolen, Markowski and his partner use unorthodox means to discover the killer. Then several vampires are found murdered and ritualistic runes carved into their bodies, and clues point to a newcomer to town who is both vampire and wizard, a lethal and seemingly unstoppable combination.

Markowski is a tough-as-nails cop, whose backstory slowly unfolds throughout the course of his investigation. Gustainis’ supernatural world of vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and other mythical creatures is fun and surprising. Written with the feel of classic mystery noir, this urban fantasy is fresh and never dull.

Full of suspense, drama, and magic, Gustainis has created another fine fantasy series with interesting characters and riveting mystery. With fast-paced adventure and plenty of twists, the novel was all but impossible to put down. This new series debut is a must-read for urban fantasy fans.
