SciFi Book Review: Rebel

Rebel by Amy Tintera

Synopsis:
After coming back from death as Reboots and being trained by HARC as soldiers, Wren and Callum have finally escaped north, where they hope to find a life of freedom. But when they arrive at the Reboot Reservation, it isn’t what they expected. Under the rule of a bloodthirsty leader, Micah, the Reboots are about to wage an all-out war on the humans. Although Wren’s instincts are telling her to set off into the wilderness on their own and leave the battle far behind, Callum is unwilling to let his human family be murdered. When Micah commits the ultimate betrayal, the choice is made for them. But Micah has also made a fatal mistake . . . he’s underestimated Wren and Callum.

Review:
Wren, Callum, and the rest of the freed Reboots arrive at what looks like a place of peace and freedom from HARC. But this group of Reboots isn’t what it appears to be, and Wren soon finds herself making a difficult decision that could put the rest of her friends at risk. Callum is Wren’s moral compass at times, and their relationship seems to be what keeps both of them going.

Rebel is the action-packed conclusion to the Reboot duology. This sequel is full of suspense, intrigue, and drama – and is impossible to put down. Wren and Callum’s journey is an intense, science fiction, adventure that teens and adults will enjoy. The excitement builds to a thrilling finale that I thoroughly enjoyed.

SciFi Book Review: Cured

Cured by Bethany Wiggins

Synopsis:
Now that Fiona Tarsis and her twin brother, Jonah, are no longer beasts, they set out to find their mother, with the help of Bowen and a former neighbor, Jacqui. Heading for a safe settlement rumored to be in Wyoming, they plan to spread the cure along the way–until they are attacked by raiders. Luckily, they find a new ally in Kevin, who saves them and leads them to safety in his underground shelter. But the more they get to know Kevin, the more they suspect he has ties to the raiders. He also seems to know too many details about Jacqui and her family—details that could endanger them all. For the raiders will do anything they can to destroy the cure that would bring an end to their way of life.

Review:
Jacqui has been living in disguise as a boy for years. When she overhears some unexpected news between her parents, Jacqui decides to help Fiona find her mother. Bowen and Fiona are now a strong couple, and their relationship is sweet – especially in the previous novel. But his comments towards Jacqui are cruel and get annoying at times. However, Jacqui is a likeable character – wise and well-prepared.

Cured is the sequel to Stung. Now that there’s a cure to the beast-like infected, the danger comes from mostly from trying to dodge the raiders. But there is plenty of mystery, suspense, and a bit of romance in this exciting conclusion. This character-driven story is a dramatic journey that I couldn’t put down.

Fantasy Book Review: Allies & Assassins

Allies & Assassins by Justin Somper

Synopsis:
Prince Anders, the ruler of Archenfield, has been murdered, leaving his younger brother, Jared, to ascend the throne. Sixteen-year-old Jared feels unprepared to rule the kingdom and its powerful and dangerous court, yet he knows he can rely on the twelve officers of the court to advise him. He also knows he can just as easily be at their mercy-especially when it appears that one of them may be responsible for his brother’s death. Unable to trust anyone, Jared takes it upon himself to hunt down his brother’s killer-but the killer may be hunting him, as well.

Review:
Prince Anders is a wise young man who’s suddenly put in a position for which he doesn’t believe he’s ready. Unable to properly mourn his brother’s passing, Prince Anders must quickly find his brother’s assassin before he or she strikes again as well as keep the peace in his land.

Allies & Assassins is first in a new young adult series from the author of the popular Vampirates series. I had high hopes for this new series as I was a big fan of Vampirates. And I am happy to say I wasn’t disappointed. This new land Somper has created is a fascinating Princedom with fragile alliances and full of exciting intrigue. This first installment is a fast-paced adventure with mystery, suspense, and interesting characters. I look forward to more stories to come and learning more about this new, fascinating land.
