SciFi Book Review: Catalyst

Catalyst by Lydia Kang

Synopsis:
In the past year Zel lost her father, the boy she loves, her safety, and any future she might have imagined for herself. Now she, her sister, and the band of genetic outcasts they’ve come to call their family are forced on the run when their safe house is attacked by men with neural guns. But on the way to a rumored haven in Chicago, Zel hears something–a whisper from Cy, the boy who traded himself for her sister’s safety. And when she veers off plan in order to search for him, what she finds is not what she expected. There’s more to their genetic mutations than they ever imagined…aspects that make them wonder if they might be accepted by the outside world after all.

Review:
When the authorities come knocking at the door, Zel and her companions must flee their home. Zel goes after Cy and decides to meet up with the rest of her friends in Chicago. However, after finding Cy, nothing else goes by the plan.

Catalyst is the sequel and conclusion to last year’s Control. Part medical thriller, part scifi adventure – this story is completely thrilling. The characters are engaging and the story is full of heart-pounding suspense and drama. I’m glad not every series needs to either be a trilogy or seemingly endless. This duology was just the right length. I enjoyed first installment, and the conclusion was just as gripping – and satisfying as well. I look forward to more from this talented author.

Not fitting into any one world, Nathan is hunted from all sides: nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. In HALF WILD, Nathan has finally come into his own unique magical Gift, and he’s on the run–but the Hunters are close behind, and they will stop at nothing until they have captured him and destroyed his father. Fantasy Book Review: The Wicked Will Rise

The Wicked Will Rise by Danielle Paige

Synopsis:
My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas.

After a tornado swept through my trailer park, I ended up in Oz. But it wasn’t like the Oz I knew from books and movies. Dorothy had returned, but she was now a ruthless dictator. Glinda could no longer be called the Good Witch. And the Wicked Witches who were left? They’d joined forces as the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked, and they wanted to recruit me.

My mission? Kill Dorothy. Except my job as assassin didn’t work out as planned. Dorothy is still alive. The Order has vanished. And the home I couldn’t wait to leave behind might be in danger.

Somehow, across a twisted and divided land, I have to find the Order, protect the true ruler of Oz, take Dorothy and her henchmen down—and try to figure out what I’m really doing here.

Review:
Amy failed in killing Dorothy, so now she’s on the run with her companions and separated from the rest of the Order. Yet Amy still has one mission: to collects the Tin Man’s heart (which she already has), the lion’s courage, and the Scarecrow’s brain. Hopefully, these things can help her take down Dorothy.

The Wicked Will Rise is the sequel to Dorothy Must Die, a dark and unique take on the continuation of The Wizard of Oz story. Dorothy, who saved Oz from the Wicked Witch turns out to be more evil and twisted than the “Wicked” witches. And the witches who formed the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked, may not be wholly without fault but they aren’t nearly as evil as Dorothy and Glinda have become. This well-paced novel is full of danger, suspense, magic, and colorful characters. I am thoroughly enjoying this captivating series. The climactic finale has several twists and ends a bit abruptly. Readers will be eagerly awaiting the next in this exhilarating series.

Fantasy Book Review: Nil

Nil by Lynne Matson

Synopsis:
On the mysterious island of Nil, the rules are set. You have exactly 365 days to escape—or you die.

Seventeen-year-old Charley doesn’t know the rules. She doesn’t even know where she is. The last thing she remembers is blacking out, and when she wakes up, she’s naked in an empty rock field.

Lost and alone, Charley finds no sign of other people until she meets Thad, the gorgeous leader of a clan of teenage refugees. Soon Charley learns that leaving the island is harder than she thought . . . and so is falling in love. With Thad’s time running out, Charley realizes that she has to find a way to beat the clock, and quickly, in this thrilling debut novel by Lynne Matson.

Review:
The island of Nil is mysterious and strange, reminiscent of the tv show Lost. The island is a character unto itself, certainly the most interesting. There are a variety of teens on the island with varying personalities and goals. The majority have formed a “city” with a voted leader that seems to work well. However, the turnover is quick – as each person only has about one year to find a portal off the island or they die. And some of the kids don’t wait until it’s their turn.

Nil is a thrilling fantasy for young adults. It’s fast-paced and engaging, packed with suspense, mystery, drama, and romance. Charley and Thad meet on the island and quickly fall in love at an unrealistic pace and level at their age; however, this is a YA novel. The intensity builds to an exciting finale, along with a nice epilogue to wrap things up. However, there are a lot of questions still left unanswered that hopefully the upcoming sequel will handle.
