Fantasy Book Review: First and Last Sorcerer

First and Last Sorcerer by Barb and JC Hendee

Synopsis:
Waylaid in their quest for the orb of the Air, Magiere, Leesil, Chap, and Wayfarer have all been wrongly imprisoned. But it is Magiere, the dhampir, who suffers the most as a cloaked interrogator employs telepathic torture.

Arriving at the Suman port city in search of Magiere, Wynn Hygeorht and her companions—including vampire Chane Andraso—seek out Domin Ghassan il’Sänke for assistance, which proves no easy task. The domin is embroiled in a secret hunt for a spectral undead with the power to invade anyone living and take the body as its host.

Even if Wynn can manage to free her friends from prison, battling this entirely new kind of undead hidden inside host bodies may be a challenge none of them can survive.

Review:
First and Last Sorcerer is the 13th novel in the Noble Dead saga, and the 4th book in the 3rd series/phase. And as announced, next year’s installment will be the finale. With a year in between each installment, I’m always grateful for recaps. These were treated well without being bogged down in details, short recaps were offered up only when needed as a catch-up to the current storyline and characters. This series/saga really should be read in order, but even an occasional reader would have little problem jumping into the story here.

Magiere, Leesil, and Wynn have a small, core group of those they can trust. The others are necessary allies to reach their goal. The Domin may have his own secret agenda, as well as Brotan. After breaking out of prison, they still have to stay hidden, fight a shade that can inhabit bodies, and find the last orb. This latest installment is intense, suspenseful, and highly entertaining. With an interesting and climactic ending – next year’s finale will be highly anticipated. This epic, vampire-centered, high fantasy saga is well worth the wait.
