Fantasy Book Review: The Golden Door

The Golden Door by Emily Rodda

Synopsis:
The walled city of Weld is under attack from ferocious flying creatures that raid in the night, bringing death and destruction. The Warden calls for Volunteers to find and destroy the Enemy sending invaders, and the heroes of Weld answer the call one by one, never to return. Rye is officially too young to go, but his brothers are among the lost and he must find them. What terrors await him beyond the Wall?

Review:
After his brothers explore beyond the Wall of Weld with no sign of their return, Rye decides to go in search of them. But since no one has explored outside Weld and ever returned to talk about it, Rye has no idea what’s in store. Unlike his brothers who are looking for adventure, glory, and knowledge, Rye has no desire to be a hero. He simply wants to find them and bring them home safely.

While Rye’s adventures really start when he leaves Weld, there is plenty of danger and suspense within Weld with its man-eating creatures that come at night. There is a lot of mystery that builds throughout the story. And as this is just the first in the series, there are still questions left unanswered. Fast-paced and action-packed, this fantasy is full of vibrant characters, a mysterious land, and an engaging plot. Readers of all ages will enjoy this promising new series.
