SciFi Book Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Cold Equations: Silent Weapons

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Cold Equations: Silent Weapons by David Mack

Synopsis:
Three years after the disastrous final Borg Invasion, a bitter cold war against the Typhon Pact has pushed Starfleet’s resources to the breaking point. Now the rise of a dangerous new technology threatens to destroy the Federation from within. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise crew answer a distress call, only to become targets in a deadly game of deception. To protect a vital diplomatic mission, they must find a way to identify the spies hiding in their midst, before it’s too late. But Worf soon realizes the crew’s every move has been predicted: Someone is using them as pawns. And the closer they get to exposing their enemy, the deeper they spiral into its trap.

Review:
Following the events in the last novel, the Enterprise crew has been shaken a bit with a friend returned and the death of another. Though, the interpersonal drama takes a backseat to the political drama and intrigue in this story. The intrigue involves a complex mystery relating to a group within the Typhon Pact. But I won’t say more than that without spoiling something. The Enterprise is in a race against the clock to free a friend, prevent a political disaster, and investigate the existence of other Soonian-type androids on an Orion planet and how it may involve a larger conspiracy.

There is no shortage of excitement and mystery in this action-paced sequel. Star Trek fans won’t want to miss this this incredible new trilogy. And published back-to-back in consecutive months, we don’t have to wait long to read them all at once. As before, Silent Weapons is impossible to put down and is completely engaging and left me ready for the next installment. Star Trek novels don’t get much better than this.
