TeeBlox

Star Trek “Hail Yeah” Shirt – The artwork on this is great! I don’t care for the pun however, but that’s just my taste.

TeeBlox

Comic and Pin – Old school X-Factor! And the bonus item is a Marvel pin. I love Marvel, so these were fun bonus items.

Summary: Despite being another black tshirt, I really like the art on this. The original Uhura looks fantastic! Am I collecting a large amount of Star Trek and Star Wars shirts? Yes. Am I complaining? Never. I love this mystery shipment. It’s consistent quality and a nice price.

Box Review: Bam Box – November 2016

Bam Box

The Bam Box was founded in 2015 by Bloof, the same team of geeks, comic book lovers and pop culture collectors that started ComiconAuction.com. We love collecting. We love the thrill of it, the mystery of it and especially that feeling you get when you have a collectible in your hands that you are really excited about. So we set out to bring something different to everyone.

There are some great subscription boxes on the market, but we felt there was still something missing. We went to the drawing board with the goal of creating the box we would want to show up on our doorstep. After a lot of ideas and prototypes we arrived at the Bam Box. From the design of the box to the items inside to the instant winners we send out, we accomplished what we wanted to do: give you the subscription box we would be jealous of.”

Cost: 1 month plan starts at $24.99 plus $7.99 s/h

Bam Box

The box has a mini mag called “Spoiler Booklet” with details on the box, with all possible 1-ups. But there was only rare pins and custom comic variants as far as I could see.
This month’s theme was “Adult Cartoon.”

Bam Box

The pin I received this month was Chef from South Park. Subscribers also could have received Cartman, Kenny, or rare Kenny’s with an additional Dead Kenny.

Bam Box

Homer Simpson Metal Sign – I don’t like the Simpsons, but this is a pretty funny sign. I’ll probably use as a gag gift at some point.

Bam Box

Cosplayer dressed up as Jessica Rabbit Print – Who wants a print of a random person no one knows dressed up as a cartoon character? Not me. Weird. If you’re going to include a print, it needs to be an actual famous person or artwork that some people would care about.

Bob’s Cronen-Burgers Print – Subscribers could have gotten a Beavis and Butthead print instead. Neither appealed to me.

Bam Box

Betty Boop Comic Variant – Some boxes could have received custom sketch covers. It looks like I received the standard exclusive black and white variant. It is signed though, so that’s cool.

Summary: I don’t like adult cartoons, or children’s either for the most part. So, already I wasn’t going to like most of the series. I thought last month’s box was sparse, but this one was even smaller (literally a smaller box). I would think two prints, a comic, sign, and a filler pin would be quite a disappointment for someone who paid full price. This used to be a unique box with fun additions I rarely saw in other boxes. But it’s definitely missing uniqueness now. A shirt or accessory or fun toy needs to be added if they’re going to keep the price point where it is.

Graphic Novel Spotlight: Days Missing Volumes 1, 2, & 3 (Enox)

Days Missing Volume 1

Synopsis:
Since the beginning of time, there has existed a being whose interaction and interference with mankind has shaped human history. His powers of time and intellect have allowed his secrecy and resulted in certain days being absent from any historical record. Their stories have never been told. Their details have never been documented. Their existence is not remembered. But, the occurrences of these days have forever changed the course of humanity’s evolution. These are the “Days Missing” from our existence, and they are about to be revealed.

Days Missing Volume 2: Kestus

Synopsis:
This thrilling sequel to the critically acclaimed series adds another layer to the story of The Steward, a mysterious being whose ability to “fold” days of time has resulted in critical human events being absent from our historical record. Their existence is not remembered…but the occurrences of these days have forever changed the course of our evolution. Since humanity’s birth, The Steward has stood alone as a guiding force for our species. But now, he is about to learn that that he is not the only one influencing our evolution! The emergence of the ancient being, Kestus, may put everything he knows in question, and the future of those he means to protect in jeopardy.

Days Missing Volume 3: Enox

Synopsis:
Days Missing: Enox concludes this saga of The Steward, an ancient being whose ability to “fold” time has resulted in critical human events being extracted from our memories and absent from any historical record. Their existence is not remembered, but the events of these days have forever changed the course of human evolution. In this epic finale, the haunting voice of Enox materializes, giving form to the Steward’s nemesis and unquestionable purpose to his existence.
The unprecedented battle that ensues will bring humanity to the brink of extinction and readers to the edge of their seats.

Review:
I was able to read all three graphic novels back-to-back. The first volume introduces The Steward and his goal of protecting humanity. The stories jump around in time among various ages. The second volume introduces Kestus, another immortal without Steward’s penchant for helping humanity. Instead, she’s a selfish woman who considers herself a goddess – until the influence of Steward begins to cultivate. And the recent third volume – Enox is bent on humanity’s destruction. And he seems to be even more powerful than Steward, and begins to affect the present day and future. This time-jumping, adventure series was fast-paced and exciting. The climactic scenes with Enox were dark, emotional, and surprising. The artwork did a wonderful job reflecting the mood and action. I highly recommend this graphic novel series for science fiction fans – even those new to comics.

Graphic Novel Review: Grave Surprise

Charlaine Harris’ Grave Surprise

Synopsis:
Harper Connelly, a psychic capable of finding dead people and reading their last thoughts, discovers a grave in Memphis with two bodies: a man centuries dead, and a girl recently deceased. How the two bodies ended up together would be perplexing enough… but the sudden appearance of a third body the next morning makes this a mystery that perhaps even Connelly can’t solve!

Review:
This is official graphic novel adaptation of the novel of the same name by Charlaine Harris. I’m not as familiar with this series as I am the Southern Vampire series, but I have read the first in this series so I was somewhat familiar with the characters. Harper has the ability of seeing the last moments of the deceased.

Grave Surprise is a suspenseful mystery. And the characters are well-developed for a graphic novel as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this well-paced and dramatic story. And the artwork fit the dark tone. I’d definitely pick up more in this series.

Box Review: Marvel Collector Corps – October 2016 – Doctor Strange

Marvel Collector Corps

This is the October 2016 box from Collector Corps and the theme was Doctor Strange – just in time for the upcoming film! The Marvel Collector Corps offers these boxes starting at $25 plus s/h.

mcc6

Each box comes with an exclusive badge and pin.

mcc5

And a card detailing the contents of the box with a look at early concepts.

mcc4

Doctor Strange #1 Variant Comic – This POP variant is awesome.

mcc

Doctor Strange Tshirt – YET ANOTHER BLACK SHIRT. And I’m not a fan of POP-styled shirts. But at least I have something to wear to opening night of the movie. And it is a unique design.

mcc2

Doctor Strange Mug – Ugh. I hate these mugs.

mcc3

EXCLUSIVE Doctor Strange Funko POP – I LOVE this exclusive design. Unfortunately, I’m NOT a fan of the monochrome POPs. I really wish it was full color to see all the details well. A sparkly full-color POP would’ve been fantastic. This just blends in.

Summary: This was a bit of a disappointment, as the mugs are terrible. And I really wanted a full color Doctor Strange exclusive. And it was a bit odd that everything was Doctor Strange-only. No supporting characters. Bummer.

TeeBlox

Star Trek T-shirt – I LOVE this design. It’s a mashup of the different crews in their primary colored shirts, in the shape of the saucer section of a ship with a fade out for the tail end of the ship. I would have liked it even more (and gotten more use out of it) if it were gray instead of black.

TeeBlox

2000AD Presents #18 – This was a fun, retro comic.

Deadpool Air Freshener – I haven’t opened it to smell it yet. But the image of Deadpool doesn’t convey something smelling good to me. But it’s Deadpool, so it’s cool.

Summary: The shirt and comic combo is awesome. This Star Trek shirt is even better than the last. This is one of the more affordable mystery packs – and it’s one of my favorites.

Graphic Novel Review: Dresden Files: Wild Card

Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files: Wild Card

Synopsis:
A bizarre double murder draws the interest of Chicago’s only wizard-for-hire. But as Harry Dresden begins his investigation, the clues lead to troubling conclusions about the possible perpetrator, and set him on a path that will place him in the middle of a conflict between the city’s three most powerful factions – a conflict that could engulf all of Chicago!

Review:
This original story is set in between White Night and the graphic novel Down Town. For those of us impatient for the next novel, these comics are a welcome addition. The story is fast-paced and fun – with plenty of suspense, humor, and magic. I only wish it was longer to see more character interactions. The artwork is fantastic, though I wasn’t a fan of how the villain was drawn. This story arc definitely makes me want to go back and read the graphic novels that I’ve missed.
