Book Review: Star Trek Typhon Pact: Zero Sum Game

Zero Sum Game

Star Trek Typhon Pact: Zero Sum Game, by David Mack

When a Typhon Pact spy steals the slipstream drive technology from Starfleet, the Federation decides to send their own spies into Breen territory to destroy any trace of slipstream technology. Deep Space 9’s Dr. Julian Bashir and Starfleet Intelligence officer Sarina Douglas are chosen for the mission specifically because of their genetic enhancements. Meanwhile, the U.S.S. Aventine’s Captain Ezri Dax must wait for their return along the border, without turning the cold war with the Typhon Pact into a real war.

Following the events in the Star Trek Destiny trilogy, several antagonistic races have joined forces against the Federation and formed their own alliance called the Typhon Pact. Doctor Bashir reluctantly agrees to take part in the espionage only because of Sarina Douglas. Bashir thinks of her as the “love of his life.” There’s also some believable, awkward tension between Ezri Dax and Bashir.

A lot is packed into this fast-paced novel. The suspense and intrigue of Bashir and Sarina’s mission is fantastic and intense. And Bashir’s infatuation with Sarina finally comes to a resolution. With fun twists and surprises around every turn, there is never a dull moment. And though it helps to have read the Destiny trilogy before simply for background and explanation of where certain characters are, it’s not necessary to enjoy this excellent miniseries debut. Ending in a shocking cliffhanger, readers will be clamoring for the next in this inspired series. Thankfully, these were released in sequential months, rather than the usual long wait. Star Trek fans won’t want to miss this one.

  1. I liked this one. I like The Aventine with Ezri Dax at the helm. Strong women are hot. David Mack writes some of the best Star Trek in my opinion.
