SciFi Book Review: The Infinity Ring: A Mutiny In Time

The Infinity Ring: A Mutiny In Time by James Dashner

Synopsis:
History is broken, and three kids must travel back in time to set it right!
When best friends Dak Smyth and Sera Froste stumble upon the secret of time travel — a hand-held device known as the Infinity Ring — they’re swept up in a centuries-long secret war for the fate of mankind. Recruited by the Hystorians, a secret society that dates back to Aristotle, the kids learn that history has gone disastrously off course.

Now it’s up to Dak, Sera, and teenage Hystorian-in-training Riq to travel back in time to fix the Great Breaks . . . and to save Dak’s missing parents while they’re at it. First stop: Spain, 1492, where a sailor named Christopher Columbus is about to be thrown overboard in a deadly mutiny!

Review:
Dak and Sera are both genius level students, especially Sera. Dak loves history, but has the annoying habit of spouting off long lectures about various historic references. Sera is a child prodigy scientist. Along with Riq, a young prodigy with linguistics, the youths are in for the adventure of a lifetime when they stumble upon Dak’s parents’ time machine and have to set the past straight.

The reason behind the evil presence throughout time who have messed with the timeline is not explained yet. Though, Sera’s occasional visions of “what should have been” are clues that history has been changed and is changing.

Their first mission back in time sends them to Spain in 1492 when Christopher Columbus is setting sail for what will eventually be known as the Americas. But Columbus’ crew is planning mutiny. Dak, Sera, and Riq must uncover nefarious plot and make sure history stays on track. Young science fiction and adventure fans will enjoy this new fast-paced series. The characters are eccentric and the plot details absurd, but the story is still amusing and exciting just the same. A Mutiny In Time is a fun and quick read with an overlying story arc of Dak’s missing parents that will keep middle readers looking forward to the next in the series.
