Science Fiction Books: Top 100

I have compiled a list of Amazon’s current 100 best-selling Science Fiction novels in print. There are a variety of subgenres listed: classics, alternative history, romance, military scifi, time travel, alien invasions, historical fiction, fantasy books, graphic novels, space operas, hard science fiction, horror, and more. Yes, “fantasy” is lumped under “science fiction” on Amazon.

These may not be the best sci fi books of all time, but these are the top current hardback and paperback bestsellers.

There are some of my favorite sci fi and fantasy authors listed here, and several I’ve never heard of. Some have won various accolades such as Hugo Awards, Nebula, or Clarke Awards.

1. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed scifi book Fahrenheit 451 is a masterwork of twentieth-century literature set in a bleak, dystopian future.

2. 1984 by George Orwell
Written 70 years ago, 1984 was George Orwell’s chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984 has come and gone, his dystopian vision of a government that will do anything to control the narrative is timelier than ever.

3. A Game of Thrones / A Clash of Kings / A Storm of Swords / A Feast of Crows / A Dance with Dragons by George R. R. Martin
An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R. R. Martin-dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine-international acclaim and millions of loyal readers. Now here is the entire monumental cycle:
A GAME OF THRONES
A CLASH OF KINGS
A STORM OF SWORDS
A FEAST FOR CROWS
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS

4. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
In Margaret Atwood’s dystopian future, environmental disasters and declining birthrates have led to a Second American Civil War. The result is the rise of the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that enforces rigid social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women. Offred is one of these, a Handmaid bound to produce children for one of Gilead’s commanders. Deprived of her husband, her child, her freedom, and even her own name, Offred clings to her memories and her will to survive. At once a scathing satire, an ominous warning, and a tour de force of narrative suspense, The Handmaid’s Tale is a modern classic.

5. Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.
So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon-both of whom have lived amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle-are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture.
And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

6. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Aldous Huxley’s scifi book, Brave New World is a darkly satiric vision of a “utopian” future-where humans are genetically bred and pharmaceutically anesthetized to passively serve a ruling order. A powerful work of speculative fiction that has enthralled and terrified readers for generations, it remains remarkably relevant to this day as both a warning to be heeded as we head into tomorrow and as thought-provoking, satisfying entertainment.

The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them “the truth.” After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional–but is it more true?

95. One Second After (A John Matherson Novel) by William R. Forstchen
In One Second After, New York Times bestselling author William R. Forstchen brings us a story which can be all too terrifyingly real. A story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, that sends America back to the Dark Ages. A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) . . . that may already be in the hands of our enemies.

96. The Princess Bride by William Goldman
William Goldman’s modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests-for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love-that’s thrilling and timeless.

97. The Umbrella Academy: Dallas by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba
The team is despondent following the near apocalypse created by one of their own and the death of their beloved mentor Pogo. So it’s a great time for another catastrophic event to rouse the team into action. Trouble is, each member of the team is distracted by some very real problems of their own. The White Violin is bedridden due to an unfortunate blow to the head. Rumor has lost her voice – the source of her power. Spaceboy has eaten himself into a near-catatonic state, while Number Five dives into some shady dealings at the dog track and The Kraken starts looking at his littlest brother as the key to unraveling a mysterious series of massacres… all leading to a blood-drenched face-off with maniacal assassins, and a plot to kill JFK!

98. Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya
Exquisite prose and wondrous storytelling have helped make Rudolfo Anaya the father of Chicano literature in English. Indeed, Anaya’s tales fairly shimmer with the haunting beauty and richness of his culture. The winner of the Pen Center West Award for Fiction for his unforgettable novel Alburquerque, Anaya is perhaps best loved for his classic bestseller, Bless Me, Ultima… Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will probe the family ties that bind and rend him, and he will discover himself in the magical secrets of the pagan past-a mythic legacy as palpable as the Catholicism of Latin America. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world…and will nurture the birth of his soul.

99. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
A masterpiece ahead of its time, a prescient rendering of a dark future, and the inspiration for the blockbuster film Blade Runner.

100. Jurassic Park: A Novel by Michael Crichton
An astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Now humankind’s most thrilling fantasies have come true. Creatures extinct for eons roam Jurassic Park with their awesome presence and profound mystery, and all the world can visit them-for a price.

Until something goes wrong.

I expected more classic science fiction and fantasy books by top scifi and fantasy authors like Isaac Asimov (the Foundation Trilogy), Ursula Le Guin, Lois McMaster Bujold, Connie Willis (Doomsday Book and others), A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or H. G. Wells (War of the Worlds or The Time Machine), as well as more recent books-turned-movies such as The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

How many of these top scifi books have you read? Are there any that surprise you? What are some of your favorite novels of all time?
