The Autobiography of Mr Spock – Book Review

The Autobiography of Mr. Spock by Una McCormack

Synopsis:
One of Starfleet’s finest officers and the Federation’s most celebrated citizens reveals his life story. Mr Spock explores his difficult childhood on Vulcan with Michael Burnham, his controversial enrolment at Starfleet Academy, his time on the Enterprise with both Kirk and Pike, and his moves to his diplomatic and ambassadorial roles, including his clandestine mission to Romulus.

Brand-new details of his life on Vulcan and the Enterprise are revealed, along with never-before-seen insights into Spock’s relationships with the most important figures in his life, including Sarek, Michael Burnham, Christopher Pike, Kirk, McCoy and more, all told in his own distinctive voice.

Review:
Spock is one of the most interesting and beloved characters in fiction, not just in Star Trek. He’s a man of two worlds, never fully fitting into either. But he finds his place aboard the Enterprise and forms a family of deep, lasting relationships with his colleagues. I’ve been waiting for this novel for years, ever since I heard it was coming.

McCormack has written a captivating, and surprisingly emotional (for a character who chooses to purge emotions) biography from Spock’s point of view. We get to experience Spock’s life, from early years to his years on the Enterprise, and beyond. His thoughts and memories of each of the people closest to him were my favorite sections. I actually got choked up reading about Bones and Kirk, Spock’s deepest and most important friendships. I had high hopes for this release, and McCormack didn’t let me down. Her love of the characters shines through, and thankfully does them justice. Spock fans will definitely want to grab a copy of this fantastic tribute.

  1. I love Saavik being compared to Michael, and that Spock got his famous catchphrase from his human grandmother, and! Spock defending his best friend from Kirk Drift! Amazing.
