Sucks To Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire (maybe)

Sucks To Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire (maybe), by Kimberly Pauley

Mina is your average teenage girl with one exception. Her parents are vampires. When the Vampire Council finds out that Mina knows about her parents, they insist that she make a decision. Mina must now choose whether or not to become a vampire herself.

Sucks To Be Me is written from Mina’s point of view in a journal-like style, in first person present tense. I’m not a fan of present tense in stories, and it would have read more like a journal in past tense. But it was still easy reading for any teenage girl.

There are several love interests, genuine friends, antagonistic peers, and other realistic teenage relationships. The main plot of the story had me guessing till the end on what Mina’s decision would be, as she ways the pros and cons throughout the book. Mina is endearing. And her trials and experiences were a fun read. My favorite being the vampire classes that Mina must take before making her decision. This was very clever and led to some fun interactions with other characters.

As a fan of vampire fiction, this was a fun story and an easy read. It’s definitely a light-hearted take on the genre. No horror here. There are some mild discussions in the book that would not be appropriate for younger readers. But young adults that enjoy short books about vampires should enjoy this one.

Sucks To Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire (maybe) releases today from Mirrorstone Books.
