Scent of Shadows

A Dark and Edgy New Superhero!

The Scent of Shadows: The First Sign of the Zodiac, by Vicki Pettersson is the first in her new Zodiac series that released February 27th.

Joanna has grown up living the high life in Las Vegas. But she’s had a troubled past and an even scarier future. Whether she likes it or not, Joanna finds herself in the middle of a war of super-powered beings. And if she makes it to her 25th birthday, she’ll become one of them. The war is between the superheroes called the Light, comprised of people from the different star signs of the zodiac, and the Shadow, their evil opposites in the spectrum. Half Light and Half Shadow, no one truly trusts Joanna. She doesn’t even trust herself.

While there are aspects of romance, Joanna faces more heartache than happiness. Pettersson weaves several elements from different genres: urban fantasy, violence, intrigue, superheroes, and myth. Pettersson has created an incredibly fun character in Joanna with many facets and layers to her personality.

This dark and edgy superhero story was a long novel at 464 pages. But I read it amazingly fast, as I literally couldn’t put it down. I’m itching to get my hands on the next in the series that, thankfully, comes out in just a little over a month!

Thanks so much for the ARC, Vicki! I loved it so much, I think I’m going to have to go out and buy the book from the store just so I can have the great cover too. This will definitely be read again.

The 2nd book in the Zodiac series, The Taste of Night: The Second Sign of the Zodiac, releases the 1st of April.

  1. Ohh…this sounds good. But that demon thing on the cover looks kind of scary and I don’t like reading stuff that is TOO creepy. Your review makes me want to give this book a try though.

  2. Really? I kind of think the guy looks like a cross between Jack Frost and Iceman. LOL
    I love it.
And I don’t think it’s creepy really. But if violence gets to you, you might be bothered by it.

  3. When do you have the time to read soooo much? Holy cow Angela! You’re a superhero yourself! I’ll admit that the book sounds intriguing, but you lost me at the 464 pages and more heartache than happiness. 🙂 It does sound great though, as your reviews always do.

  4. Jack Frost and Iceman…hehe. I see the Iceman remsemblance. I can take some violence but if things get too eerie, I’ll outta there.

Frank Peretti’s “This Present Darkness” kinda scared me because the way he described the battle between angels and demons was intense because that stuff is real.

  5. Vicky – I’ve spent all my spare time reading lately! I actually have 2 reviews waiting to post on later dates. Reading fast and writing reviews is kind of a lame superpower though. LOL

Heather – Hope you like it!

SolShine – It’s not at all angels vs. demons. Just think a little more violent X-Men vs. Brotherhood. And the bad guys can be killed. Maybe you can read a bit of it in the store, just to see if it interests you.

  6. Angela – no superpower is lame! Especially reading and writing! Holy cow batman! Do you know how many writer’s are reading this right now, hoping to some day posses those powers? 🙂

  7. Man, I wish I could get my hands on some of these ARC’s for my blog, especially one’s that sound as good as this one. I like the use of the Zodiac too, sounds very cool.

  8. I am reading this now and am upset that things like sleep, laundry and work are keeping me from it. This is an awesome story!

    Thanks for suggesting it.
